How to use CSULA financial aid first year?

I received grant money to attend CSULA and was wondering when and how do I take out the money to use it to buy books and pay for tuition? first day of school is this thursday. Thanks!
When do I receive the check? I want to buy my books the day school starts so I don’t fall behind because I heard they start off at a fast pace.

In other words, you receive check before school starts or after? First quarter buy out of my own pocket?
